The Speed Factor

by

For the tenth episode of AnglingBuzz TV, we’re bring back legendary angler Al Lindner to talk about the “Speed Factor” in fishing. You hear folks talking about various lures and presentations, but speed is often the largest factor in what makes those particular strategies “tick.”

In this article, we will be discussing the latest fishing reports and techniques from various regions. From walleye fishing in Minnesota to vertical jigging for lake trout and salmon in Michigan, there’s something for every angler to enjoy. So let’s dive in and explore the exciting world of fishing!

Leech Lake, Minnesota

We start our fishing adventure on Leech Lake with veteran guide Brian Broast. He reports that the bite has been tapering off a bit due to the mayfly hatch. The water temperatures range in the 70s, and the best time to fish is in the morning. The walleyes can be found in 8 to 14 feet of water, both on the rocks and weed edges. Brian recommends using a rock runner bottom bouncer with a butterfly blade, along with a full crawler or chunk crawler. Alternatively, you can try pitching a fireball spin or jig. Another effective technique is using a Whistler jig with a chunky crawler. According to Brian, these techniques have been successful in catching walleyes on Leech Lake. So if you’re planning a fishing trip to Leech Lake, be sure to give these methods a try!

Alexandria Region, Minnesota

Moving on to the Alexandria region, we check in with Josie Guerra. She reports that walleye and sunfish fishing has been excellent by fishing the outside weed edge. If you can find open areas in the weeds with a sand bottom, you’re likely to have great success. The walleyes are running 15 to 20 inches, with a good number of oversized fish measuring 25 to 29 inches. Additionally, there is a good population of 8 to 9 inch bluegills in the area, which is an added bonus for anglers. Josie recommends using a Lindy rig presentation and slowing down when you find fish. This will increase your chances of having a great day on the water.

Northern Wisconsin

Heading over to northern Wisconsin, we join Jeff Evans as he chases walleye. Due to recent rain, fishing on Chippewa Flowage, Lake Superior, and the St. Louis River has been tough due to muddy water. However, the Hayward Lakes area has been experiencing a great walleye bite. The fish can be found on the first weed edge in stained water lakes, around 6 to 8 feet of water. In clear water lakes, they are found in around 15 to 18 feet of water. Jeff suggests using a weed Master jig tipped with a minnow or drifting a leech on a slip bobber rig along the weed edges. The water temperatures on most lakes in the area are in the mid-70s.

Michigan

In Michigan, Captain Chad Belts shares the latest hot bite. He recommends heading out for some light tackle vertical jigging for lake trout and salmon. Ports like Grand Traverse Bay, Northport, Manist ee, and Frankfurt offer great opportunities for anglers. The steep structure and isolated humps in these areas provide the perfect setup for fishing. The lake trout have moved to deeper structures and steep breaks, where they can find the thermocline. Typically, 60 to 80 feet of water is best for this time of year, but sometimes you may need to go as deep as 90 to 120 feet. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some salmon as well, as they are moving up north. Captain Chad suggests using a two-ounce jig for targeting salmon while vertical jigging. This technique is not only effective but also provides a great opportunity to catch a mixed bag of fish. So grab your light tackle and get ready for an exciting fishing adventure in Michigan!

As we enter the month of July, the summer patterns in our region are finally starting to materialize. It’s an exciting time for anglers as they can take advantage of the various fishing opportunities available. Whether you’re targeting walleye in Minnesota, lake trout and salmon in Michigan, or exploring the waters of northern Wisconsin, there’s something for everyone. So grab your fishing gear and get ready to make some great memories on the water!
