Vermilion has been extremely busy this year with the US/Canada border lockdown. Boat traffic has been high, but the bite has held up for a number of different species of fish including walleye, smallmouth bass, muskies and pike.
Here’s some excellent advice from local guide Billy Rosner on how he’s been finding and catching all four species of fish:
“Hey, we’re starting to get into our dog days of summer here, but there’s still plenty of fishing action to be had.
“If you’ve never tried leadcore trolling, August is a great month to get into it up here on Lake Vermilion. I really like pulling these #7 Glass Shad Raps in either the perch or the crayfish pattern. That works really well on Vermilion. There’s a lot of sand flats in that 16 to 24 foot depth range and just get in and around those basins. It’s a great way to locate fish, and once you get on some fish, too, you can slow down and pull livebait rigs.
“For the musky bite, think rocks. Your big blades, your big Cowgirls, baits like that, are really producing muskies right now. Look around your rocky reefs. That’s really been putting out a lot of fish.
“Smallmouth bass, they’re out off of the first break, a little deeper also – that 15 to 24 foot stuff. Baits that have been working include Ned rigs, whacky fishing, dropshots and are good.
“Northern pike, too. With these warmer water temperatures, the pike are out a little bit deeper than you’d think right now. If you’re not finding them on the deep weeds, start fishing the rocks and trolling some of that deeper water. That will get you in on some pike action.”
