Lake Vermilion (MN) Fishing Report – Jarek Wujkowski

by
Walleye

The walleye fishing has been nothing short of spectacular as of late. I am finding very good concentrations of fish in as shallow as 18ft down to as deep as 40ft. Wind is the main catalyst in determining fish locations at this time of year on Vermilion. Narrow your search by focusing on windblown structure with some adjacent sand and you will be greeted by some hungry walleyes! Finding these areas can be quick and painless by studying a good contour map and quickly graphing areas with one’s side imaging. With the main forage consisting of juvenile perch, match the hatch and imitate the forage base. Snap jigging Jigging Raps has been my favorite method of take, however jig and minnow presentations have also yielded excellent results.

Muskie

With water temps hovering around the mid 50s, focusing on shallow water is key. Any patch of green weeds no matter the size of the area it covers has potential to hold a fish; while on other areas of the lake keying in on shallow rock will be the better bet. Casting jerk baits and glide baits has seen the most fish for me.

Crappie

Crappie fishing remains great on areas of the lake. My boat has been seeing limits of really nice sized fish in the 11-13″ range. Plastics under floats have been the favored presentation for these upward feeders.
