Grand Rapids, MN Buzz Bite Report 5-23-2022

The fishing has been excellent in the Grand Rapids, MN area. On the larger bodies of water, water temps were between 48 – 53 degrees and on some of the smaller lakes water temps were in the mid-fifties and even approaching the high-fifties in some of the shallow backwater bays.

Bass, walleye, northern pike and panfish can all be found in fifteen feet of water or less.

The prespawn bass bite is beginning to heat up.

Smallmouth bass can caught on big sand flats or on rock piles in four to nine feet of water. Rapala X-Raps in a size 10 was the best bait by far, but jigs, squarebills, and ned rigs also produced a few fish.

Largemouth bass can be found in the back of shallow water bays, and a majority of these fish are going to be in six feet of water or less. Ned rigs, a jig & plastic, jerk baits or squarebills will all produce good numbers of largemouths. They are really schooled up so once you find one, expect more to be close by.

Bluegills and crappies can be found in the warm backwater bays on wood, emerging lily pads, bulrushes, and cattails. Small jigs paired under a float with plastics or crappie minnow has been the program.

Walleyes can be caught along the first break in eight to fifteen feet during the day on jigs & minnows, slip bobbers, and crankbaits.  Anglers can also expect to catch a few by pulling Rapala Original Floaters during the evening hours on the sand flats and shoreline breaks in twelve feet of water or less.
