Grand Rapids Area Buzz Bite Report 1-31-2023
Even with the recent cold snap the fishing has remained good in the Grand Rapids area. By now all the fish have transitioned into their mid-winter patterns.
Look for crappies and bluegills in the basins on most lakes. Target the edge of the basins with small tungsten jigs and small spoons. Two baits that have been working really well is the Clam Snow Drop Jig XL paired with a Maki plastic and the VMC Bull spoon tipped with a wax worm.
Stocked trout can still be caught on designated trout lakes along the shoreline in less than ten feet of water. This presents a good opportunity for sight fishing for those interested. Small spoons and jigs like the VMC Bullfly will produce fish. The best bite has been from sunrise till around 9 or 9:30 in the morning.
Anglers should expect to catch walleyes on classic mid-lake structure on most lakes in the area. Look for rock piles, saddle systems and points in fifteen to thirty feet of water. Target these spots during primetime hours early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Spoons paired with minnow heads seem to be out performing set lines, but it’s worth putting set lines/tip-ups out because they are still producing a few fish.
I Fish Pros or tip-ups with a minnow set about a foot off the bottom has been good option for northern pike and jumbo perch.
