Central Wisconsin Fishing Report – Phil Schweik

by

What a great week in the outdoors in central Wisconsin. We have had some outstanding fishing trips followed up by another very successful bear hunt.

Fishing has been very good for all species this past week with several nice catches with mixed bags of walleyes, crappies, white bass and catfish. Water temperatures are in the mid 60’s right now but they are dropping which is creating the start of the fall feeding frenzy. Most of our action has been by focusing on the Wisconsin River system and its flowages. We have had our best luck this past week by fishing with a 1/8th ounce lead head jig tipped with a fathead minnow. Most of the time we have been fishing the main river channel along the current breaks but at times we have shifted to the back-water areas off the main river channel where we have at least 6 to 8 feet of water.

We have also had a very good week with musky fishing and first time musky anglers and Brothers Sean and David Brummett from Illinois both connected on very nice fish this past week by working current breaks along the main river channel in Lake Dubay with Hooksetters guide Phil Schweik. A lot of our action this past week has been on bucktails but we have also had some luck on topwater and jerkbaits as well.

Our 2016 bear season is about half over and it has been a very good season so far for us here at Hooksetters with 5 nice bears already being taken by our guests. Just this past weekend Jason Jankowski tagged a really nice bear that was coming to one of our bait stations. It was his first and he couldn’t have been happier! For those of you that haven’t tagged a bear yet don’t give up. There is still plenty of time left in the season so just be patient and keep your baits fresh. If for some reason your baits stop getting hit, don’t hesitate to start a new one we have plenty of time left.

I know it is a little early for some of you but for all you fishermen and women out there that are wrapping things up for the season, now is a good time to get a hold of Amherst Marine to set up your boat winterization and storage. Give Jerry and the guys a call down at Amherst Marine at 715-824-5635 and make arrangements to have your boats properly taken care of before winter arrives. They are the best in the area!

Have a great week,
