Minnesota fishing guide Dustin Monson of Hawg Hunterz Guide Service gives his latest Buzz Bite report for the Brainerd Lakes Area on May 9th, 2022

Brainerd Lakes Area Buzz Bite Report 5-9-2022

Our lakes have opened up and the crappies and bluegills are biting in the Brainerd Lakes Area. There are three major locations that you can find these panfish.

Depending on the lake, bluegills and crappies will either be roaming the basins, staging along weed lines and breaks, or on shallow weed flats near hard structure. Make sure to pay attention to your temperature gauge, because these fish will be looking for the warmest water.

Generally, we begin our search deep and move shallow, as that is the typical progression unless there is a significant warm-up or green weeds/food in the shallows.

As of right now a lot of fish can be caught in weed flats between 14ft – 18ft or up in the shallows in less than 7ft of water in the shallow bays.

For the deeper fish we have been catching them vertically jigging 1/32 oz – 1/16oz jigs paired with plastics, minnows, or wax worms. Slip bobbers have also been working well.

For the shallow fish a hair jig or jig and plastic under a float will produce fish.

Right now is the time to schedule any guide trips for the open water season because dates are filling up fast! Good luck to all the anglers out fishing this week and good luck on the opener this weekend!
