The weather has been hot throughout August and so has the fishing over here on Lake Sakakawea. Both the East and West ends are producing numbers of fish.
We have been catching a bunch of those eater sized walleyes in that fourteen to eighteen inch range.
Most of those fish have been in fifteen to twenty-five feet of water.
You can catch them multiple ways. Pulling crankbaits or slow death rigs is a great option and it allows you to cover lots of water. If you find fish schooled up, Jigging Raps or a jig and plastic should be your go to.
Durning those low light periods we’ve actually had a ton of success on jerk baits in shallower water.
For larger walleyes look in shallow water that is less than ten feet. A lot of those fish are in shallow eating on emerald shiners. Casting jigging raps or other baits that imitate emerald shiners will producing some nicer fish.
There is a good smallmouth bass bite on mid lake rocks, humps and mid lake points in fifteen to twenty-five feet.
Finding the rocks has been the key for finding the smallmouth bass. White tubes and white flukes will produce fish. You can also get some fish on drop shots and ned rigs if the bite is slow.
