The Green Lake smallmouth bass bite in central Wisconsin has been exceptionally good over the last few weeks. We’ve been averaging anywhere from 30 to 60 smallmouth bass per day with several over that nineteen to twenty inch size.
Green lake is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin at over 240 feet deep; with that being said the smallmouth bass just finished spawning about two to three weeks ago.
They are finally on their summer patterns which means there’s lots of different ways that you can go out and target some of these smallmouth.
During those early morning hours you can capitalize on a great topwater bite along the shoreline. The Rapala Skeeter Pop and poppers have been producing some nice fish.
Now when that topwater bite stops, switch up to a more finesse approach.
Crawling small tube jigs and ned rigs along the bottom has been the ticket during the day. Drop shots have also been working.
The smallmouth have wanted it really slow, so we have been pausing for fifteen to twenty seconds during our retrieve to trigger bites.
As far as tackle is concerned, seven to seven and a half foot medium power rods will work well. The big thing is line. Long fluorocarbon leaders are a must out here on Green Lake because of the good visibility.
