Leech Lake Buzz Bite Report 5-27-2021

by

The walleye bite on Leech Lake has picked up over the week and weekend. The lake has transitioned pretty quickly post opener. The walleyes are starting to make their way towards deeper water and have moved off the shallow rocks and flats.

Fish those secondary points, and other structure adjacent or close to areas you found walleyes earlier in the year.

The water temps are in the low to mid sixties and most of the fish are being caught in ten to twenty feet of water.

A jig and a shiner minnow is producing fish. Rigging crawlers and leeches is also proceeding a fair amount of walleye. We are running six feet of six to eight pound Sufix fluorocarbon for our snells. The fluorocarbon is key, because of the clear water on Leech.

One other trick we like to do is to use smaller hooks when rigging leeches. This allows the leech to swim higher off the bottom and be seen easier.

Another great species to target on leech lake this time of year is panfish. Crappies and bluegills have made their way to the resort harbors around the lake. Target the docks and other permanent structures you find inside the harbors. Most of the crappies and bluegills will be in less than seven feet of water.

Use baits like puddle jumpers, small crappie tubes and crappie minnows under a float to catch these fish.  A fixed or slip float will work well.

This is a great time of year to fish Leech lake, make sure you get our there and have some fun!
