Leech lake

Leech Lake Buzz Bite Report 5-13-2021

by

The Minnesota fishing opener is just around the corner and it is looking like Leech lake will be in awesome condition for  opener weekend. The weather looks like it is supposed to be perfect and the walleyes will be biting.

The water temperatures on Leech lake right now are in the mid fifties depending on where you are on the lake.

Walleyes will be able to be found on main lake points, rocky shore lines, especially wind blown shorelines. Focus in that six to ten foot depth range.

For the opener your go to baits should be a jig in a minnow or jig and a plastic. To be more specific you will want a long shank fireball jig and a shiner and you’ll want to double hook your shiner minnow. Shiners are a main forage for walleyes on leech and often will produce the most fish. The long shank jigs are going to help with your hook up percentage.

Some of the better producing jig colors are going to be green, fire tiger, and red.

Anglers are starting to get into good numbers of jumbo perch pretty shallow. Most of the fish are coming in ten feet or less. You will have to do some sorting so keep that in mind.

Crappies and bluegills are also being caught in the shallow bays near their spawning areas. Fish will be congregated near shallow creeks, docks and marinas. Small panfish jigs under a bobber with crappie minnows have been the ticket.

Good luck this weekend during the Minnesota opener!
