Gull Lake (MN) Fishing Report – Hays Baldwin

by

Hays Baldwin shares the latest fishing report from the Gull Lake of central Minnesota for early September.

Hey guys, Hays Baldwin here with your Buzz Bite Report. We’ve been out on Gull Lake catching some really nice walleyes, just like the one you see in the picture. Today, I want to share with you the techniques we’ve been using to catch these fish.

Jigging Rapala

The main technique I’ve been using is the number seven Jigging Rapala. I’ve been casting it just outside the weeds, in water depths ranging from 18 to 30 feet. Surprisingly, we even caught a big fish out of 42 feet of water. It seems that the big fish are moving out and following the schools of bait. These walleyes are easy to find and catch.

Northland Tackle Fireball Jig

In addition to the Jigging Rapala, we’ve also been using one of my all-time favorite jigs, the Northland Tackle Fireball J ig. This jig is a quarter ounce in size and we’ve been pairing it with either a small red tail or a fat head. It’s been working really well for us.

Lindy Rig

Another presentation that has been successful for us is the simple Lindy rig. Due to the fish being higher off the bottom, we’ve had to use longer leaders. I’ve been using a nine-foot leader and pairing it with a red tail. The red tail is a native minnow to Minnesota walleyes and they absolutely love it. It’s about four inches long and has a lot of energy, which the walleyes can’t resist.

Aqua View Camera

One tool that has been incredibly helpful for us is the Aqua View camera. It allows us to see what’s happening underwater and helps us differentiate between walleyes, northern, and suckers. We’ve been seeing tons of fish on the camera, especially outside of the weeds. I highly recommend investing in an Aqua View camera if you’re serious about walleye fishing.

Conclusion

As the fall progresses, I expect the walleye bite to only get better. The fish are moving out and following the schools of bait, making them easier to find and catch. Remember to try out the Jigging Rapala, the Northland Tackle Fireball Jig, and the Lindy rig with a longer leader. And don’t forget to invest in an Aqua View camera to enhance your fishing experience.

Thanks for tuning in, guys. We’ll catch you next time!
